Fire Cadets

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service's Fire Cadet programme is a nationally recognised three-year programme run by our Community Development & Safeguarding Team at six fire stations across Essex.

We currently have 18 Fire Cadets Units at Clacton, Dovercourt, Great Baddow, Harlow, Orsett and Southend.

During the course, which runs one evening a week for 40 weeks, Cadets will learn all about the fire service, what we do, and how we help make Essex safer. Fire Cadets will have the opportunity to take part in a significant number of operational fire service activities aligned to the National Fire Cadet Award. These include; hose running, ladder pitching, pumping, breathing apparatus, search and rescue, first aid, control room procedures, science of fire and much more.

Another important part of the course is community safety, where Cadets will work with our Prevention Department, firefighters and partner organisations to help the communities of Essex become safer. This will include community engagement, home fire safety activities, fire station events and open days.

Fire Cadets will also have the opportunity to work towards their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

Once the Cadets have completed their first year, they will demonstrate everything they have learned at a special "Passing-Out" Parade to their families and friends. Progression into year two and three is made through application and selection within your unit.

We are now recruiting NEW fire cadets. If you are interested, please complete the application form and send it to: essexfirecadets@essex-fire.gov.uk.

Are you working towards a Duke of Edinburgh award?

Our Duke of Edinburgh Officer Christina Prior has given some short lessons to help you progress. Christina has been working with our Fire Cadets to help them continue their work towards their DofE awards during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
