Fire Service set to reassure community after fatal fire

UPDATE 9pm 13 January:

Due to weather warnings in place for tomorrow (14 January), our team will be door knocking on Friday (15 January) instead.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service will be reassuring residents in Saffron Walden tomorrow (14 January) and will be giving them safety advice after a fatal fire in the early hours of Sunday 10 January.

The community safety team for North Essex will be knocking on doors near and around Blacklands Close in Saffron Walden, where a man sadly died following a house fire, to give fire safety advice to residents and ensure they all have working smoke alarms in their homes.

The Fire Service staff will be wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and following Government social distancing guidelines while providing home fire safety advice.

The team will give smoke alarms to any home that needs them for free as well as proving advice on how and where to fit them in the home.

Nick Singleton, Operational and Community Risk Manager for North Essex said: “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the man who sadly lost his life. We know this sad news will come as a shock to the local community and we want to reassure residents who have been affected by this incident and will give them home fire safety advice to keep themselves safe.

“We want every home in Essex to benefit from working smoke alarms and will provide them for free to any home without them. If you or someone you know doesn’t have working smoke alarms on every level of their home, you can arrange a free visit from our home fire safety team who can deliver smoke alarms to you while following government guidance to keep everyone safe. Find out more at essex-fire.gov.uk/book.”

Crews from Saffron Walden, Newport, Thaxted, Chelmsford and the Urban Search and Rescue team (USAR) attended the fire in a detached house on Sunday at 2:12am. The cause of the fire is still being investigated but is not being treated as suspicious.
