Landlords and tenants

Legislation requires all private landlords to ensure the fire safety of their tenants, as well as offer protection against carbon monoxide poisoning.

Failure to comply with the new regulation could result in a £5000 fine.

Landlords are required to:

• Fit at least one smoke alarm on each floor of the property
• Fit a carbon monoxide detector in rooms containing a solid fuel appliance
• Check that the alarms are working at the start of every new tenancy
